Oscar-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan has stated that his upcoming cinematic adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, is the most challenging and extreme production of his career.

Speaking in an interview on CBS News’ 60 Minutes program on Sunday night, the director revealed that the production pushed the boundaries of traditional filmmaking, testing the practical limits of modern cinema.

Nolan explained that his creative approach relies on placing the audience directly inside the narrative framework rather than observing characters from a distance.

For The Odyssey, he created an immersive experience that conveys the raw, sensory atmosphere of the ancient world.

“I always try to have a point of view on the story that’s from inside the film. I’m trying to be in the race, in the maze with them. In the case of The Odyssey, I’m trying to put the audience into that horse. I’m trying to put them on the deck of Odysseus’s ship,” Nolan stated.

The director added that he approached the project with a high sense of responsibility, writing the screenplay to maximise the visual scale of the historical narrative. He disclosed that the production utilised two million feet of IMAX film to capture the scope of the story.

However, the film’s massive scale and reliance on analogue production methods have drawn criticism from tech billionaire Elon Musk. Reacting to the production details, Musk expressed scepticism about the extensive use of traditional film, calling the approach inefficient in the modern era. He argued that advanced digital rendering and simulation tools could achieve superior results at a fraction of the cost and labour.
