More than two years later, their demands are being met satisfactorily, and in some instances, even surpassed. Based on his tactile achievements, people now beat their chests to posit a state that used to be synonymous with insecurity and underdevelopment, is rising from the ashes like a phoenix. And, as is the signature of seasoned bankers, he has a Midas touch that is goading Zamfara’s fortunes around with every strategic move. He has seamlessly ignited a renaissance, tackling the state’s most pressing challenges and unlocking its vast potential which were previously invisible.

When he assumed office, insecurity overwhelmed virtually every corner of the state, crippling its economy. Education was in shambles, and healthcare was a distant memory for many. However, the new governor was undeterred. With a clear vision and staunch commitment, he launched his “Rescue Agenda”, prioritising security, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic revitalisation.

The outcomes have been phenomenal.

The establishment of Community Protection Guards has significantly reduced banditry, restoring peace to communities and breathing life into the economy. Education is getting much-needed attention, with scholarship schemes, exam fee payments, and teacher recruitment, which comes in tandem with training that conforms to the latest world standards. The state government has also invested heavily in infrastructure development, constructing new schools, renovating existing ones, and providing essential resources like textbooks and digital tools.

Healthcare is now receiving the boost it perennially sought, as the renovations of hospitals and free medical outreach programmes are routine. The state government has also introduced innovative health initiatives, such as mobile clinics and health insurance schemes, to increase access to quality healthcare for all citizens.

Infrastructure development is transforming the state’s landscape. Roads are being built, water supply is improving, and urban renewal is creating vibrant spaces. The state capital, Gusau, is undergoing a facelift, with new roads, streetlights, and public amenities. Economic empowerment initiatives, like cash grants for women and job creation schemes, are stimulating growth and reducing poverty.

Governor Lawal’s grip at the rein has breathed new life into Zamfara. The state is shedding its turbulent past, emerging as a symbol of hope and progress.

Also worthy of note is the 10-year development plan the governor unveiled recently. The plan is a comprehensive roadmap aimed at transforming the state’s economy and improving the lives of its citizens. It is built on six pillars: Economy, Infrastructure, Social Welfare, Human Capital, Governance, and Environmental Sustainability.

The plan focuses on harnessing Zamfara’s strengths in agriculture and natural resources through partnerships with organizations like the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MoFI) and the African Development Bank. This aims to boost mechanized farming, agro-processing, and value chains, creating jobs, improving food security, opening markets, and reducing poverty-driven insecurity.

The development plan is the first comprehensive long-term plan in Zamfara’s recent history, built on robust data, wide stakeholder engagement, and alignment with national and global development frameworks, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Nigeria’s National Development Plan 2050, and the African Union Agenda 2063.

The plan sets clear sectoral priorities, measurable outcomes, and a monitoring and evaluation framework that ensures transparency at every stage of implementation. Governor Lawal envisions Zamfara becoming a benchmark for transformative economic growth, not just in Nigeria, but across Africa.

As the phoenix rises, Zamfara’s people are smiling again, their futures looking brighter than ever. The destination is yet to be reached, but with Governor Lawal reign at the rein, every course is clear. This phoenix will continue to rise, spreading its wings and illuminating the path to prosperity for generations to come.
