THINGS REMEMBERED: Marriage In Hausa Land

Despite the infiltration of Western civilisation, such as the cutting of wedding cakes and the exchange of rings, marriage in Hausa land, especially in northern Nigeria, is still influenced and built around culture, tradition and religion.

From courtship to the marriage proper, the families of the couple play very critical roles. They can make and mar any relationship.

The dignitaries at any marriage ceremony in Hausa land depend on either the social and economic status of the intending couple or their families.

Among the Hausa people, marriage goes beyond a union between two individuals to a bond that connects families and communities.

Also, Islam, which is the dominant religion in the region, strongly influences marriage among the Muslims, as the rites follow laid-down principles of the faith.

From records gathered by LEADERSHIP, the process often begins with kayan lefe—gifts presented by the groom’s family to the bride. This is followed by the payment of sadaki (bride price), which is usually modest, in line with Islamic teachings that encourage simplicity in marriage.

Courtship in Hausa society is traditionally guided by family involvement rather than open dating. Parents and relatives often play key roles in identifying suitable partners, ensuring compatibility in terms of religion, character and family background. Once both families agree, preparations for the wedding commence.

The wedding ceremony is usually colourful and extends beyond a single day. One of the highlights is the Kamu ceremony, where the bride is “hidden” from the groom’s family until a token is presented. Another important aspect is the Fatiha, the Islamic marriage rite conducted by an Imam, during which prayers are offered and the union is formally sealed.

Hausa brides are often adorned with intricate henna designs known as Lalle, while traditional music and dances add vibrancy to the celebrations. Despite modern influences, many Hausa families strive to preserve these customs, passing them down through generations.

In all, marriage in Hausa land continues to reflect a rich blend of faith, culture, and communal values, reinforcing its importance as a cornerstone of society.
