Tributes have continued to pour in for the 22nd Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, as prominent leaders across Nigeria commended his distinguished service and enduring contributions to national security.
The outpouring tributes were expressed in a programme of events during a Thanksgiving Service held for the immediate-past Inspector General of Police at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Redemption Pavilion, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Sunday.
Leading in the outpouring of accolades, President Bola Tinubu recalled his first encounter with Egbetokun in 1998. He described the then-young officer as one who embodied “character, discipline, intellectual depth, and an unwavering sense of duty.”
“There was a quiet confidence about him, rooted not in ambition, but in competence and integrity. Those early impressions endured,” the President stated.
He further reflected on Egbetokun’s service as his Chief Security Officer (CSO), noting that he discharged the role with “exceptional professionalism, loyalty, and diligence.”
Tracing his career through various operational, investigative, and administrative roles, the President observed that Egbetokun built a reputation defined by discipline, consistency, and results, earning recognition as calm under pressure and firm in decision-making.
According to President Tinubu, Egbetokun’s tenure as Inspector-General brought “stability, clarity, and professionalism” to the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), while advancing institutional strengthening and a more intelligence-driven approach to policing.
Also paying tribute, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State commended the retired IGP for carrying the weight of national responsibility with dignity and honour.
“You demonstrated courage in decision-making and resilience in the face of complex security challenges. Your service stands as a shining example for future generations of officers and public servants alike,” the governor stated.
In his remarks titled “Retirement Tribute to an Exemplary IGP,” Adams Oshiomhole, a former labour leader and Senator representing Edo North, praised Egbetokun’s rare blend of courage, discipline, humility, and integrity. Recalling his time as Squadron Commander of Mobile Police Force (MPF) 5 in Benin City, Edo State, Oshiomhole highlighted his professionalism and neutrality.
“Despite the political climate at the time, you showed commendable civility and non-partisanship in ensuring a secure electoral environment. Your deep concern for the welfare of police personnel was also evident,” he noted.
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), also lauded Egbetokun’s tenure, describing it as one marked by meritorious service, professionalism, and a sustained commitment to institutional reforms.
He particularly commended the strengthened inter-agency collaboration between the Armed Forces and the Nigeria Police Force, noting that such synergy significantly enhanced national security outcomes.
Similarly, General Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief Defence Staff (CD), acknowledged Egbetokun’s contributions, emphasising his professionalism, resilience, and steadfast commitment to maintaining law and order in the face of evolving security challenges.
Egbetokun’s successor and current Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, described him as “a distinguished officer, an exceptional leader, and a worthy statesman.”
“Beyond your professional accomplishments, your humility, intellect, and deep sense of patriotism have been truly inspiring. You have mentored countless officers, instilling in them the values of discipline, diligence, and excellence. The enduring impact of your leadership will continue to resonate within the Nigeria Police Force for years to come,” IGP Disu stated.
The Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) also highlighted the strong collaboration between the DSS and the Police under Egbetokun’s leadership. He noted that the Force intensified operational policing, leading to thousands of arrests, improved crime response, and measurable gains in public safety.
He further emphasised reforms in personnel welfare, including timely promotions, motivation initiatives, and significant investments that boosted morale and operational capacity.
For his part, welcoming him into the fold of retired police chiefs, IGP Ogbonna Onovo (Rtd) commended Egbetokun for combining sound judgement with professional efficiency to achieve commendable results.
Also, speaking at the Thanksgiving Service, congregants also eulogised the retired IGP for his compassion, generosity, and strong sense of faith. Many recounted personal testimonies of his support for medical care, education, and general welfare.
As tributes continued to pour in, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun’s legacy stands firmly rooted in discipline, service, and a steadfast commitment to national development—an enduring example for current and future generations of law enforcement officers.
