As the festive season approaches, members of the Abia State branch of the National Union of Transport Workers (NURTW) have been urged to prioritise safety.
The commissioner for Transport, Dr Chimezie Ukaegbu, made the appeal yesterday during the branch’s end-of-year-party and distribution of over 500 bags of rice to its members in Umuahia, the state capital.
Ukaegbu said: “You know the traffic rules and regulations already. But, for the sake of emphasis, I advise you to desist from disobeying them and other unsafe practices while driving.”
He assured the union of the continued support of the government, including inclusion in its policies and programmes to further develop the transport sector.
He lauded them for the cordial relationship existing among them, and the prevailing security and peaceful atmosphere in motor parks in the state.
Ukaegbu, who argued that the developments are in line with the agenda of the state governor, Dr Alex Otti, , commended the branch for organising the event and the kind gesture.
In his remarks, the senior special assistant to the governor on Transport, Hon. Obioma Nwogbe, applauded the union for its commitment to the development of Abia and the welfare of its members.
Earlier, the branch chairman, Comrade Chukwuma Azode, commended the state government for the ongoing infrastructure development among others in the state.
He appreciated Ukaegbu for serving as a dependable bridge between the branch and the government, and reaffirmed the members “unwavering support for Otti’s administration.”
