US President Donald Trump has ordered American flags to be lowered to half-staff across the country following the death of country music legend Dolly Parton at the age of 80.

Trump announced the tribute after Parton’s death was confirmed on Tuesday, describing the singer as one of the greatest country artists in history and praising the impact she had on millions of people.

The flags are expected to remain at half-staff for one week in honour of the late singer, whose career spanned more than seven decades.

In his tribute, Trump described Parton as a unique figure whose influence extended far beyond country music, noting the affection she commanded from audiences around the world.

Parton, who rose from poverty in rural Tennessee to become a global music icon, was celebrated for songs including “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “Coat of Many Colours,” and “I Will Always Love You.”

Her death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from musicians, actors, public figures and fans across the world, with many highlighting not only her musical achievements but also her philanthropy and enduring cultural influence.

The presidential decision to lower the national flags underscores the extraordinary place Parton occupied in American cultural life, with her music and public persona becoming synonymous with the country’s entertainment heritage.

Her legacy now extends beyond her record sales and awards to her work in film, business, education and philanthropy, particularly through the Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library.

With flags lowered across the United States, the country is marking the passing of one of its most beloved entertainers.
