Trump To Address UN First Time Since 2020

United States President Donald Trump will on Tuesday address the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for the first time since 2020, in a speech the White House said will set out his “vision for the world” and take aim at “globalist institutions.”

Trump is expected to speak at around 09:50 EDT, following Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in line with UN tradition.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump’s address will highlight his “historic accomplishments in just eight months, including the ending of seven global wars and conflicts.”

“The president will also touch upon how globalist institutions have significantly decayed the world order, and he will articulate his straightforward constructive vision for the world,” Leavitt added.

The speech came as tensions flared over the Palestinian statehood as several countries, including Britain, France, Australia, Canada and Portugal have recognised a Palestinian State in recent days.

These recognitions have left the US increasingly isolated among the permanent members of the Security Council. Washington has made clear that it will continue to oppose such recognition and wield its veto power when necessary.

Israel condemned the moves, insisting recognition rewards Hamas for its 7 October 2023 attack, which killed about 1,200 people and left 251 taken hostage.

Since then, Israeli forces have pressed deeper into Gaza City, with tanks advancing into the centre from both north and south. Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry claimed that more than 65,000 Palestinians have been killed since the offensive began.

Earlier this week, France and Saudi Arabia hosted a summit on a two-state solution, which was ignored by the US. Leavitt however did not confirm whether Trump would address Palestinian statehood in his remarks.

Trump is also expected to meet with Arab leaders later in the day, separately from European-led efforts on the conflict.
