A group of members who identified themselves as supporters of former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has declared support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Bauchi State, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar SAN, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group, led by one of Tuggar’s coordinators, announced its decision during a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Bauchi yesterday.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Musa Abdullahi said the decision was taken to strengthen the APC’s chances of reclaiming power in Bauchi State in the 2027 governorship election.

“We are ready to support the APC and its governorship candidate. The party primary has been conducted and a winner has emerged. We must all rally round him to ensure victory in the general election,” he said.

He explained that members of the group had remained loyal to the APC since its formation, noting that they followed Ambassador Tuggar from the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) into the APC in 2014.

“Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar is one of the founding members of the APC. He led us from the CPC into the APC, and we have remained committed to the party. Although he contested for the party’s governorship ticket and lost to M.A Abubakar, SAN, we have accepted the outcome in good faith,” he stated.

The group also reaffirmed its loyalty to the party and its candidate, saying its position was in line with the APC constitution.

The coordinator, however, criticised a recent press conference organised by the leadership of the Tuggar Foundation, which questioned the emergence of MA Abubakar, SAN, as the party’s governorship candidate.

According to him, those who addressed the earlier press conference acted without the approval or consent of Ambassador Tuggar.

“Those who addressed that conference acted on their own. They neither consulted Ambassador Tuggar nor obtained his written approval. To the best of our knowledge, he has not indicated any intention to leave the APC, a party he helped to build,” he said.

When asked whether he had obtained Ambassador Tuggar’s permission to address journalists and announce the group’s position, the coordinator clarified that he was not speaking on behalf of the former minister.

He added, “We are here as members of his support groups to make it clear that we stand behind the candidature of MA Abubakar, SAN, as the APC governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections.”
