The Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, has called for intensified efforts to elevate bilateral trade between Nigeria and Türkiye to $5 billion, describing current levels as far below potential.

Speaking during an official visit to Kaduna, where he engaged with leaders of the Kaduna Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (KADCCIMA), Poroy revealed that trade now stands at around $2 billion, with Turkish investments in Nigeria totaling about $400 million.

“Nigeria, as one of Africa’s largest economies, offers vast opportunities for Turkish investors, but our figures don’t reflect this potential,” he said, labeling the meeting “fruitful” and a launchpad for deeper collaboration, including sector-specific talks.

Poroy emphasised public-private partnerships as key to shared economic goals, praising chambers of commerce as vital bridges for business ties. He outlined plans like trade fairs, business delegations, and bilateral meetings to drive growth, backed by a new Joint Economic Trade Commission for annual monitoring and solutions.

To ease dealings, he promised faster visa processing, with business visas to Türkiye now available in days.

KADCCIMA president Alhaji Farouk Suleiman hailed the visit as “historic,” noting it was the first such engagement in over 15 years.
