Türkiye’s July 15 Resistance Greatest Democratic Defiance In History, Says Erdoğan

President of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has described the resistance mounted by the Turkish people during the failed July 15, 2016 coup attempt as unparalleled in the history of world democracy.

In a message marking the 10th anniversary of the failed coup, Erdoğan said the events of July 15 remain one of the darkest chapters in Türkiye’s political history, but also one of its greatest demonstrations of democratic resilience.

He said the coup attempt, allegedly orchestrated by the Fetullahist Terrorist Organisation (FETO), was designed to throw the country into prolonged instability and undermine its sovereignty.

“By standing up for their independence and future to confront the coup plotters, our august nation asserted to the entire world through their heroic resistance that the will of the people can never be subjugated on these lands,” Erdoğan said.

He added, “Undoubtedly, the Turkish nation’s prudence, courage, and foresight on the night of 15 July are also unprecedented in the history of world democracy.”

The Turkish president described the coup attempt as more than a conventional military takeover, insisting it was “an all-out act of invasion” targeting Türkiye’s independence.

According to him, the Presidential Complex and the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, symbols of the country’s democratic will, were among the main targets of the plotters.

Recalling his address to the nation on the night of the coup attempt, Erdoğan said he had declared that he recognised no authority greater than the will of the people.

“On the night of 15 July, I underlined in my public statement that I had never recognised any power greater than that of the people,” he said. “I made that statement in full confidence that the Turkish nation would stand firm in defence of its own will.”

He praised citizens who defied the coup plotters, saying they took to the streets with “unwavering faith and determination,” risking their lives to defend democracy and national independence.

“Risking their lives to defend the independence of their country, its democratic achievements, and its free will, our nation repelled the putschists and inscribed an epic of national will that shall be remembered with pride for generations to come,” he said.

Erdoğan said the government responded swiftly after the failed coup by implementing structural reforms to remove anti-democratic elements from state institutions and strengthen democratic governance.

He also highlighted military and security operations carried out against terrorist organisations both within and outside Türkiye, saying these efforts paved the way for what he described as the “Terror-Free Türkiye” initiative.

“The process, one of the essential cornerstones of our ‘Century of Türkiye’ vision, is—praise be to Allah—advancing firmly towards its destination with an all-encompassing and inclusive approach through the diligence of our security forces and the support of the political establishment,” he said.

“I believe the success of the ‘Terror-free Türkiye’ process will contribute not only to the peace and tranquillity of our country but also to that of our region.”

The president also linked the country’s economic and technological progress over the past decade to the resilience demonstrated after the coup attempt.

He cited investments in energy, transportation, healthcare, agriculture, technology and defence, saying Türkiye had recorded significant achievements under its National Technology Move.

Among the projects he highlighted were the domestically produced TOGG electric vehicle, the KAAN national fighter aircraft, national corvettes and uncrewed aerial vehicles, which he said have earned global recognition.

On foreign policy, Erdoğan said Türkiye has become an influential player in resolving regional and global crises over the past decade.

“In all crisis regions, we have not hesitated to assume responsibility for maintaining peace and tranquillity by supporting the oppressed and the righteous, rather than the powerful.

“Wherever there is oppression or injustice, we have been the voice of international law, justice, and conscience.”

He argued that Türkiye’s growing international influence stems from the sacrifices made by citizens who defended democracy during the failed coup.

“If Türkiye is now regarded as a country whose contribution is sought, whose word carries weight, and who is consulted on regional and global matters, behind this success lies the will of our august nation, who stood up for their independence and future at the cost of their lives on the night of 15 July,” he said.

Erdoğan also renewed calls for stronger international cooperation against terrorism, warning that FETO continues to receive covert support from some countries despite what he described as the gradual disintegration of the group’s overseas network.

“I would like to take this opportunity to underscore the necessity of maintaining vigilance against FETO, which considers all means permissible to achieve its ambitions, adopts every possible guise, and does not hesitate to exploit every concept, including democracy, freedom, and human rights,” he said.

Recalling that 253 people were killed during the failed coup attempt, Erdoğan urged the international community to support Türkiye’s anti-terrorism efforts.

“As a nation that saw 253 of its sons and daughters martyred by the putschists on the night of 15 July, our primary expectation from the global community is to support Türkiye’s legitimate struggle.

“Global peace, security, and prosperity can only be achieved through a resolute and uncompromising fight against terrorist organisations without any distinction and through sincere cooperation,” he said.
