U-20 WWCQ: Falconets Touch Down In Lilongwe For Malawi Clash

Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, have landed in Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi, as they finalize preparations for the crucial second leg of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

The highly anticipated encounter is slated for Saturday at the Bingu National Stadium, where the Falconets will face the Young Scorchers of Malawi.

The Nigerian contingent arrived aboard a chartered flight after a smooth journey from Lagos, receiving a warm reception from local football officials and members of the Nigerian community in Lilongwe. The team went through a light training session upon arrival to shake off travel fatigue and adapt to the afternoon conditions expected for match day.

Coach Moses Aduku’s side carries a commanding 2-0 lead from the first leg, which took place last weekend at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Nigeria. Goals from two of the team’s most promising attacking talents secured the advantage

Indeed, the Falconets have built a reputation as a formidable away side in this qualifying campaign. In the first round, they traveled to Kigali and earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rwanda.

Then, in the second round, they showed resilience to edge past Senegal 2-1 in Dakar. That away form could prove decisive as they look to overcome the Young Scorchers in front of what is expected to be a passionate home crowd.

The aggregate winner of this final qualifying tie will secure one of Africa’s tickets to the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, scheduled to be held in Poland this September.

The Falconets, who are no strangers to the global stage—having reached the final twice (2010 and 2014) and the quarterfinals in the last two editions—are eager to return and make another deep run.

Malawi, meanwhile, face an uphill battle. The Young Scorchers will need to overturn the two-goal deficit while keeping the Falconets’ potent attack at bay.

Their coaching staff has hinted at tactical changes and a more aggressive approach, but Nigeria’s defensive organization and midfield control remain major obstacles.

Kickoff on Saturday is set for 3 p.m. local time at Bingu National Stadium, a venue that has hosted several high-profile international matches. The Falconets will hold one final training session on Friday evening before match day.

A victory or even a draw with a two-goal margin would see Nigeria book their place in Poland, extending their remarkable streak of consecutive U-20 Women’s World Cup appearances.
