Former Senator for Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has advised the federal government to reply with the same gesture should the United States slam a visa ban on Nigeria.

He stated this in response to a leaked internal memo, signed by the US secretary of state Marco Rubio, which indicated that 36 countries, including Nigeria, could face travel restrictions if approved by US President Donald Trump.

The likely US action is reportedly driven by concerns over a lack of government transparency and inadequate databases for properly vetting travelers from the affected nations.

Sani, however, said there is no justification for the US to include Nigeria in such a ban because Nigeria does not fall within the category of those countries.

On X, he stated, “The US should not ban Nigerians from traveling to their country. There is no reason to do that. We don’t fall into the category of those Countries they consider as threats. But if they eventually ban us, our country should respond with similar gesture. However, there are those of us who appreciate the peace and dignity of our villages and mud houses than going to live in places where we are not welcomed,” he stated.
