The United Kingdom has announced a series of new measures to combat violence against women and girls, including the introduction of Raneem’s Law and the launch of a pilot domestic abuse protection order scheme.

This was contained in a government press release issued on Friday.

‘Raneem’s Law’, which is named after Raneem Oudeh and her mother Khaola Saleem, who were killed by Raneem’s ex-husband, would require police to respond to reports of domestic abuse with urgency.

It will also ensure that victims receive the specialist support and resources they need as quickly as possible.

The pilot domestic abuse protection order scheme which will start in early 2025, will see 999 control rooms equipped with domestic abuse specialists to advise on risk assessments and work with officers on the ground.

According to the release, the specialists will be backed up by dedicated teams to improve how the police respond to domestic abuse calls, including using new technology to respond more quickly such as rapid video response.
