Andy Burnham has been confirmed as the new leader of the United Kingdom’s ruling Labour Party, paving the way for him to succeed Keir Starmer as the country’s next prime minister.

Burnham’s confirmation on Friday follows Starmer’s resignation in June after mounting political pressure over declining approval ratings and controversy surrounding the appointment of Peter Mandelson as the UK’s ambassador to the United States.

With Labour holding a commanding majority in Parliament, Burnham is expected to assume office as prime minister without the need for a fresh general election, in line with the UK’s parliamentary system.

His emergence was uncontested, with no rival challenging his leadership bid. The victory marks Burnham’s third attempt at the Labour leadership after unsuccessful bids in 2010 and 2015.

Addressing party members after his confirmation, Burnham pledged to build on the achievements of the outgoing administration.

“I am ready to lead and build upon the foundation” laid by Keir Starmer, he said.

Burnham praised Starmer’s record in government, citing improvements in public services and Britain’s international standing.

According to him, National Health Service (NHS) waiting times have fallen under Starmer’s leadership, rail services have been returned to public ownership, and the UK has regained a more prominent role on the global stage.

The incoming Labour leader also promised to restore public confidence in government and ensure neglected communities receive greater attention.

“I will give hope back” to the British people and revitalise forgotten parts of the country, Burnham said.

Calling for unity within the Labour Party, Burnham warned against internal divisions, saying they would only strengthen political opponents.

“We won’t beat the right if we are infighting,” he said.

He further assured party members that differing opinions would be respected under his leadership.

“I won’t suspend or punish Labour members with different views to mine,” Burnham stated, adding that he has not yet decided on the composition of his cabinet.

Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, returned to Parliament through a by-election four weeks ago and had long been regarded as the frontrunner to succeed Starmer.
