Iran bowed out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup without suffering a single defeat after a dramatic injury-time goal in Austria’s 3-3 draw with Algeria denied Team Melli a place in the Round of 32.
Iran’s hopes of progressing hung on the outcome of the Group G clash between Austria and Algeria after they had completed their fixtures with three draws and three points. They needed either side to claim victory to remain above the loser in the standings.
However, Austria striker Sasa Kalajdzic headed home with virtually the last kick of the match in the 96th minute to rescue a draw, ensuring Austria finished above Iran and claimed the final qualification spot.
It was a cruel end to a campaign in which Iran remained unbeaten but ultimately paid the price for failing to convert draws into victories.
Despite enduring a turbulent tournament, during which the squad was escorted out of the United States immediately after each match amid heightened security arrangements, Iran came within moments of reaching the knockout stage.
Team Melli opened their campaign with a thrilling 2-2 draw against New Zealand national football team before earning a creditable goalless draw against Belgium national football team. They then fought back to secure a 1-1 draw with Egypt national football team in their final group match, although many in the Iranian camp believed they should have taken all three points after a controversial late decision denied them victory.
Iran captain Mehdi Taremi had expressed his frustration after the Egypt match, describing the tournament as a “disaster”.
“It’s a disaster World Cup; a disaster,” Taremi said.
“I mean, FIFA have to solve every problem here, but unfortunately they have not been able to solve it since the beginning.”
The heartbreaking elimination means Iran leave the competition unbeaten, yet without a place in the knockout rounds, as a dramatic twist elsewhere ended their World Cup dream at the final moment.
