The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended 19 students for one academic session over alleged examination malpractice following recommendations by the institution’s Students’ Disciplinary Committee.

The suspension was conveyed in a letter signed by the Director of Administration, Dr. Citizen Ekpo, on behalf of the Registrar, Dr. Chukwuka Icha.

The development was confirmed in a statement made available on Tuesday in Calabar.

Speaking on the decision, the head of the university’s Public Relations Unit, Effiong Eyo, said the suspension followed approval by the university’s Senate after it considered the recommendations of the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.

According to Eyo, the affected students have been suspended for the 2025/2026 academic session and are expected to resume their studies in the 2026/2027 academic session.

“The university has said the students would resume their studies in the 2026/2027 academic session,” Eyo said.

He explained that the affected students were drawn from various faculties and departments across the institution, including Administration, Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Arts, Education, Allied Medical Sciences, Pharmacy and Environmental Sciences.

Others are students from Nursing Science, Peace and Conflict Studies, Science Laboratory Technology, Estate Management, Marketing and related departments.

Eyo added that the university management had directed all deans, heads of departments and relevant units to strictly enforce the suspension and ensure full compliance with the directive.
