Urhobo political leaders have endorsed Dr. Austin Orette as their preferred candidate for the Delta South Senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The endorsement was announced on Wednesday in a statement presented by Dr. Okpako Oki on behalf of Okere and Agbarha indigenes, who said the decision followed consultations among stakeholders within Urhobo communities in the district.
According to the group, the move was informed by the need to support a candidate they believe can address key challenges in Delta South, including infrastructure, rural electrification, healthcare, education, unemployment and women empowerment.
The leaders also called for broader cooperation among ethnic groups in the district, urging Ijaw, Isoko and Itsekiri stakeholders to work towards a common goal as political activities gradually build up ahead of 2027.
Delta South Senatorial District is known for its diverse ethnic composition, with political outcomes often influenced by alliances across the Urhobo, Ijaw, Isoko and Itsekiri communities.
Political observers say endorsements such as this are part of early positioning by interest groups, as potential contenders begin consultations and build support ahead of party primaries.
While Orette’s potential ambition is yet to be formally declared, the endorsement reflects growing political interest in the race, which is expected to attract attention as the election is getting closer.
