US Condemns Killing Of Plateau Cleric’s Family, Demands Justice For Victims

The United States has condemned the killing of nine members of the family of Plateau-based cleric, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, describing the attack as “horrific” and urging Nigerian authorities to ensure those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.

In a statement issued on Friday, the US expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and raised concerns over the recurring attacks on Christian communities and other vulnerable groups in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

The US noted that it had recently engaged Nigerian officials on the deteriorating security situation in the region, stressing the need for stronger measures to prevent further violence.

It called on the Nigerian government to bolster security efforts and ensure the protection of Christians and other vulnerable communities from continued attacks.

“The United States strongly condemns the horrific killing of members of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo’s family in Plateau State, Nigeria. The continued violence targeting Christian communities and other vulnerable populations in Nigeria’s Middle Belt is deeply alarming,” the statement read.

It added, “We extend our deepest condolences to the victims’ families and all those affected. As I discussed last week with Nigerian officials, we must do more to prevent violent acts like those yesterday. The perpetrators must be held accountable, and urgent action is needed to strengthen security and protect Christians and other vulnerable communities.”

Reaffirming its support for Nigeria’s efforts to tackle insecurity, the US said it would continue collaborating with the Nigerian government and other partners to combat terrorism and violent extremism.

“The United States remains committed to working with the Nigerian government and our partners to combat terrorism, counter violent extremism, and ensure that Christians and all Nigerians can live and practice their faith freely without fear of violence or persecution,” the statement added.

The condemnation followed the July 12 attack on Kum community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, where nine members of Rev. Dachomo’s extended family, including a two-month-old baby, were killed during an overnight assault.

Rev. Dachomo, who serves as the Regional Chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) for Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, alleged that his family has been repeatedly targeted because of his outspoken campaign against what he described as the ongoing genocide in Plateau State.

The cleric disclosed that his grandmother and an uncle had also been killed in separate attacks allegedly carried out by extremists.

Dachomo further revealed that after burying the nine victims, he received a written threat purportedly from the same militia group, warning that he would be their next target. The threat, he said, came shortly after the funeral of his slain relatives, heightening concerns over his safety and the continued violence in the state
