A United States lawmaker, Riley Moore, has credited former President Donald Trump with authorising a joint Nigeria–US military operation that reportedly led to the killing of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, described as the second-in-command of Islamic State globally.

Moore, who serves on the US House Appropriations Committee, said the operation formed part of intensified counterterrorism cooperation with Nigeria and was aimed at dismantling extremist networks operating in the Lake Chad Basin.

He also warned that individuals involved in attacks against Christian communities in Nigeria would be tracked and brought to justice, describing the strike as a strong message to extremist groups.

Speaking during an interview on NewsNation, Moore said the US leadership under Trump remained focused on counterterrorism and the protection of vulnerable communities affected by extremist violence in Nigeria.

He also said the administration increased its engagement with Nigeria after the country was designated a “nation of particular concern” over alleged religious persecution issues.

Moore added that he was personally directed by Trump to examine the situation in Nigeria, leading to a fact-finding visit and a report submitted to the White House on security concerns and protection of affected populations.

According to him, the recommendations focused on strengthening protection for communities affected by extremist violence and improving coordination in counterterrorism operations.

In a statement shared on X, Moore said Trump remained committed to addressing violence against Christians in Nigeria, describing it as a priority concern for his political base.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters confirmed that al-Minuki was killed in what it described as a “meticulously planned and highly coordinated” precision strike in the Lake Chad Basin.

Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, said the deceased commander was one of the most experienced operational leaders in the extremist network, with roles spanning weapons production, drone development, and propaganda operations.

He added that intelligence reports indicated al-Minuki had recently been elevated within the organisation’s global structure, making him one of its top-ranking figures before his death.

Security sources also linked the slain commander to earlier Boko Haram operations, including the 2018 Dapchi schoolgirls abduction in northeastern Nigeria.
