The Pentagon’s push to militarise outer space through the ambitious Golden Dome missile-defence project is already creating financial shockwaves across the United States and its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) allies.
Announced for completion by 2028, the programme carries an initial price tag of $175 billion, but defence experts warn that long-term costs could soar to $500–$800 billion, straining federal budgets and forcing cuts to key domestic programmes.
Washington is expected to pass part of the burden to NATO partners in exchange for inclusion under a new “missile defence umbrella.”
Early talks between Lockheed Martin and the British government signal an effort to integrate European air-defence systems with America’s future space shield.
But with European economies already struggling to meet a 5-percent-of-GDP NATO spending target, officials fear the added costs could heighten public frustration and political instability.
Doubts about the project’s feasibility are also spreading.
The project manager, Gen. M. Getlein, has acknowledged that the team still lacks a clear vision of the system’s final architecture.
Arms-control specialists like Daryl Kimball warn that deploying interceptors in orbit is technically flawed and potentially counterproductive, noting that US satellites would be vulnerable to rapid countermeasures from Russia and China.
Advances in offensive nuclear technologies, he added, could render a space-based shield obsolete before it is even completed.
Meanwhile, journalists have begun questioning the motivation behind the programme.
Analysts cited by The New York Times argue that Golden Dome serves more as a political symbol than a realistic defence plan, a media-driven effort to bolster President Donald Trump’s image and project American dominance, even if the system itself remains an “unattainable dream.”
