A United States federal judge has ordered President Donald Trump’s administration to suspend taxpayer-funded television advertisements promoting him, following criticism from Democrats and some Republicans ahead of the November midterm elections.

US District Judge Jennifer Rochon issued a 14-day temporary restraining order on Sunday, barring the administration from producing or airing the advertisements.

According to US media reports, the Trump administration spent $20 million from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) budget on advertisements promoting the president.

In her ruling, Rochon directed the administration not to enter into, renew or expand agreements authorising the production and broadcast of the advertisements.

“Defendants shall not enter into, renew, or expand any agreement authorizing the development, creation, dissemination, placement, or airing of the challenged advertisements,” Rochon said in the court order.

The plaintiffs argued that the advertisements violated restrictions on the use of public funds for political propaganda.

According to the court order, the plaintiffs alleged that the advertisements “exceed the purposes authorized by Congress and violate restrictions on publicity and propaganda.”

Reacting to the ruling, the plaintiffs, represented by the nonprofit legal organisation Democracy Forward, welcomed the court’s intervention.

“We are pleased the court acted swiftly to prevent more taxpayer dollars from being used for such blatantly unlawful political propaganda,” they said in a statement issued by Democracy Forward.

“There is no legal justification — and no precedent — for the president to use the machinery of the government and funds set aside by Congress for other uses to influence electoral outcomes that further his own agenda.”

Although Trump is not contesting a seat in the November midterm elections, he has been campaigning for Republican candidates as his party seeks to retain control of Congress.

The White House has defended the expenditure, maintaining that the advertisements were public service announcements.

One of the advertisements, which began airing in late September, featured a song saying “Love Me” as Trump declared that “America will never be a communist country.”

Another advertisement showed the president walking down a hallway in black-and-white footage as he warned of a “final battle.” An onscreen message stated: “Paid for by the US Government.”

The advertisements have attracted criticism across party lines, with some lawmakers questioning the use of public funds to promote the president ahead of the elections.

Democratic Senator John Hickenlooper described the advertisements as “illegal” and “propaganda,” while some senior Republicans also expressed reservations about the campaign.

Last week, Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform that he and his political campaign would pay for the advertisements promoting him.

However, the White House subsequently told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the president’s post “was not referring to reimbursement.”

The court’s order temporarily prevents the administration from continuing the disputed advertising campaign while the legal challenge proceeds.
