The Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr Uwemedimo Udo, has lauded the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, for his commitment to improving the standard of education by delivering world-class learning facilities across the state.
Dr Udo, who is also the State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), made the commendation on Friday during the commissioning of the newly reconstructed QIC Government Model Primary School, Oku, describing the project as a life-changing intervention that has restored hope to generations of pupils and residents of the community.
The school, originally established in 1914 by Qua Iboe Church missionaries, has undergone its first comprehensive reconstruction in over a century, emerging as a state-of-the-art model learning centre equipped with 19 modern classrooms, ICT facilities, a sickbay, administrative offices, staff quarters and other amenities designed to provide a conducive teaching and learning environment.
As an alumnus of the school, the Uyo Council Chairman expressed deep emotion while addressing guests at the ceremony, noting that Governor Umo Eno had demonstrated that quality education remains a priority of his administration.
Dr. Udo assured the Governor that the local government would take full ownership of the facility to ensure its sustainability.
”We have approved the deployment of dedicated security personnel for the school and have also budgeted for lawn mowers to ensure proper maintenance of the premises. Our pupils should concentrate on learning and not engage in manual labour such as clearing grass with cutlasses,” he stated.
While appreciating the Governor’s intervention, the Chairman conveyed the collective request of Oku Clan leaders for the establishment of a public secondary school in the community. He noted that such a facility would complement the new model primary school and ensure a seamless transition for pupils.
Representing Governor Umo Eno at the event, the Political Adviser, Dr Godwin Ntukude, reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to continue delivering people-oriented projects under the ARISE Agenda, stressing that education remains a critical pillar for sustainable development and human capital advancement.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Umoh, described the project as the first comprehensive reconstruction of the school in its over-a-century history, adding that the improved infrastructure coupled with the 1:25 teacher-to-pupil ratio would significantly enhance learning outcomes.
Goodwill messages from the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Rt. Hon. Anietie Etuk; the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Anieti Udofia; the Clan Head of Oku, Etebom Dr Enefiok Okpon; and the school management all commended Governor Umo Eno for investing in the future of Akwa Ibom children through quality education.
The commissioning ceremony attracted members of the State Executive Council, the leadership of Uyo Local Government Council, community leaders, stakeholders and residents, who described the transformation of the historic institution as another visible dividend of democracy.
For the people of Oku and Uyo Local Government Area, the commissioning marks not just the unveiling of a new school building but the beginning of a new era of academic excellence and opportunity for generations to come.
