The Golden State Valkyries won the WNBA championship in only their second season, defeating the Atlanta Dream 68-63 in Game 7 of the Finals on Sunday.
The victory came in the first Game 7 in WNBA Finals history, after Atlanta had tied the series on Thursday. Gabby Williams led Golden State with 30 points and was named Finals MVP.
She scored 28 of her points in the second half, including a three-pointer with just over two minutes remaining that put the Valkyries ahead 60-57. Tiffany Hayes and Veronica Burton then made free throws to close out the win.
Williams said the title was built on positive energy and a team-first culture, adding that her teammates were focused on defense, rebounding and doing whatever was needed rather than individual scoring.
Golden State, formed in 2024 and the WNBA’s newest team, won in front of a sellout crowd of more than 18,000 at Chase Center in San Francisco.
The loss marked Atlanta’s fourth Finals defeat in the franchise’s 18-year history.
