University of Calabar (UNICAL) has appointed Dr Ukam Ngwu as acting head of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies in the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies.
Its spokesperson, Eyo Effiong, made the remarks during an interaction with LEADERSHIP yesterday in Calabar.
A statement issued by the Public Relations Unit confirmed that the appointment would run for two years, effective January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2027.
“The appointment was formalised in a release from the office of the Vice‑Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, who signed the letter,” the notice read.
It added that Dr Ngwu is expected to “discharge his duties diligently by effectively administering the department to ensure optimal productivity.”
In the same release, the Vice‑Chancellor warned that “the Prof. Offiong administration will not hesitate to sanction any Head of Department who fails to turn in results within the given timeline or who breaches University regulations.
“This underscores the institution’s commitment to accountability and timely academic outcomes.
Dr Ngwu, a seasoned scholar with a PhD in Mass Communication and extensive publications in development and political communication, brings a wealth of experience to the role.
His academic credentials include an LLB, BL, and an LLM, positioning him well to lead the department’s teaching and research agenda.
“The university looks forward to Dr Ngwu’s leadership in advancing the department’s mission of producing skilled journalists and media practitioners,” the statement continued.
It also highlighted the broader context of Unical’s recent expansion, including the establishment of a new Faculty of Communication and Media Studies.
The appointment comes as part of Unical’s ongoing restructuring efforts, which have seen the unbundling of Mass Communication into several specialised departments such as Journalism, Broadcasting, and Public Relations.
These changes aim to meet contemporary educational demands and align with the reforms of the National Universities Commission.
University officials expressed confidence that Dr Ngwu’s stewardship will enhance the department’s productivity and maintain high academic standards.
They reiterated that any deviation from university policies would be met with firm action, ensuring a stable and focused academic environment.
“With this appointment, Unical reaffirms its dedication to nurturing excellence in media education and research,” the release maintained.
