‘We No Dey Carry Last’ — Chidimma Adetshina Vows to Fight On as South African Court Delays Deportation Case

Former Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, has vowed to keep fighting after a South African court postponed a ruling in her deportation case until August 19.

The 25-year-old beauty queen is challenging an attempt by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs to detain and deport her over claims that she is living in the country illegally.

After appearing before the Cape Town Regional Court on Monday, Adetshina took to Instagram to express how the legal battle has affected her.

“Exhausted — yes. Burnt out — yes. Depressed — yes. Will I give up? No! We no dey carry last. See you next month,” she wrote.

The court reserved judgment after efforts to reach an out-of-court settlement failed.

South African authorities arrested Adetshina in Cape Town in June, alleging that she returned to the country despite being declared a prohibited person. Prosecutors also claimed she obtained Nigerian passports for herself and her child before re-entering South Africa through Mozambique.

However, her lawyers denied the allegations, insisting she was born in South Africa and that her documents were invalidated without a fair investigation. They also argued she is not a flight risk and noted that her citizenship dispute is already before the High Court.

Adetshina, who represented Nigeria at the 2024 Miss Universe pageant and finished as first runner-up, will now wait until August 19 to learn whether she will be detained while deportation proceedings continue.
