Weah Lauds FIFA’s Crackdown On Racism, Hate Speech In Football

Former Liberian President and football legend George Weah has thrown his full weight behind FIFA’s intensified campaign against racism and hate speech, describing the global governing body’s efforts as “the best thing to happen to football”.

Weah, who serves as the Honorary Captain of FIFA’s newly constituted 16-member Players’ Voice Panel, said the initiative represents a major step towards protecting the integrity of the game and fostering a culture of unity, respect and inclusion across world football.

The panel, made up of former male and female players from diverse ethnic backgrounds and representing all six continental confederations, has been tasked with monitoring and advising FIFA on the implementation of anti-racism measures and broader initiatives to combat discrimination in football.

Speaking in an interview with former France international Mikaël Silvestre on the FIFA Podcast, Weah stressed that football must remain a vehicle for peace, friendship and social cohesion rather than division.

“First of all, it’s a good initiative to fight and eradicate hate speech and racism,” Weah said. “In the past, most of us experienced racism and bullying at a high level. To see that FIFA is making every effort to eradicate racism and fight against hate speech is the best thing to happen to the game.”

The former World Player of the Year noted that football’s universal appeal makes it a powerful tool for bringing people together regardless of race, nationality or cultural background.

“This is a game of unity, peace and friendship. We don’t need to hate people,” he said. “You can have your views, but you need to understand other people’s cultures.”

Weah commended FIFA for not only imposing sanctions on offenders but also investing in educational programmes for schools and communities worldwide.

According to him, lasting change can only be achieved when young people are taught the values of tolerance and coexistence alongside football skills.

“FIFA needs to make sure that those who don’t understand that people who love the game need to stay, live and work together are held accountable,” he said. “Those who constantly engage in hate speech and use offensive language to bully others need to be punished.

“What FIFA is doing is very good because it is not just about punishment. FIFA is also going into schools and communities to teach young people that we can all live together while enjoying the game.”

The Liberian icon also reflected on his own football journey and his lifelong dream of appearing at the FIFA World Cup. Growing up in Liberia, he recalled how television was his only window into football’s biggest tournament.

“From where I come in Africa, television was the only means of watching the World Cup,” he said. “Like many young people, we dreamed of playing at the World Cup one day.”

Although Weah never achieved that dream with Liberia, narrowly missing qualification on two occasions, he remains proud of the role football played in rebuilding his country’s image during periods of civil unrest.

“We experienced wars, and during our civil crisis, we pushed our national team to help rebuild the image of our country through sport,” he said.

The football great also expressed pride in watching his son, Timothy Weah, represent the United States at the World Cup.

“It’s a blessing for me,” he said. “My wife and I worked hard to support him. Today, Timothy has the chance to show what he has learned over the years.”

As FIFA continues to strengthen its global stand against discrimination, Weah believes the Players’ Voice Panel can play a pivotal role in ensuring the experiences of former and current players shape meaningful policies.

For the African football icon, the mission is clear: protect the game, celebrate diversity and ensure football remains a platform where people from different backgrounds can compete, connect and thrive together.

“This is the most beautiful game,” Weah concluded. “And we need to protect it.”
