Following a stressful work week, for several Nigerian Gen Z, resting at home is no longer an option but an opportunity to unwind, create content, socialise and embrace what many describe as the ‘soft life’ culture.

In cosmopolitan cities like Abuja, Lagos, and Port Harcourt, many young people are changing the meaning of leisure by patronising trendy hangout spots and immersing themselves in affordable entertainment options that combine relaxation with social media aesthetics.

Cafe Culture and Restaurants

A noticeable trend is the rise in café culture and in visiting visually beautiful restaurants. Places that possess stylish interiors, live music, and visually appealing meals have become major attractions for customers seeking both comfort and online-worthy experiences.

From brunch outings to coffee dates, many young Nigerians now opt for calm spaces where they can relax, take photos, work remotely, or spend time with friends.

Shopping Malls, Indoor Entertainment And Karaoke

Indoor entertainment is another activity quickly gaining ground. Bowling alleys are hardly ever empty, and the same goes for karaoke lounges, game lounges and snooker spots.

Shopping malls are witnessing increased patronage, especially among Gen Zs, looking for exciting options to traditional nightlife. These locations now serve as places to socialise and network. A place where young people express themselves, bond, celebrate birthdays and escape daily pressures.

Picnic, TikTok And Instagram

The picnic culture has also become a popular weekend culture. Public parks and open spaces are increasingly filled with groups enjoying music, food, and outdoor games while creating content for platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

What was once considered a simple outing has become a fashionable leisure activity. No longer simple and mundane, but themed decorations, coordinated outfits and professional photography are the order of the day.

Staycations, Spa Visits And Wellness Experiences

Staycations have also become a thing with young professionals who yearn for relaxation without the hassle, stress and cost of long-distance travel. Short hotel stays, apartment rentals, spa visits and wellness experiences are now regarded as convenient ways to recharge mentally and emotionally.

In all of this, social media has also played a vital part in driving these leisure trends. Influencers and lifestyle content creators regularly showcase new places, fun activities, and weekend experiences, encouraging followers to check out and try similar lifestyles.

Despite the country’s economic challenges, many young Nigerians continue to prioritise moments of leisure and relaxation. Weekend leisure is no longer regarded as a luxury but a way to escape from the pressures of everyday life.
