Former Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger has thrown his weight behind France as the team to beat at the 2026 World Cup, insisting that Didier Deschamps’ squad currently stands head and shoulders above every other contender.

In an interview with French daily Le Figaro, the legendary manager explained why he believes the two-time world champions are primed to reclaim football’s biggest prize.

“I place them above all others,” Wenger said. “France possess an extraordinary wealth of talent, and Deschamps brings invaluable experience to the table.”

While acknowledging the team’s attacking riches could pose a tactical risk, Wenger brushed aside concerns about defensive balance.

“We have so many forwards and creative players that the danger is tilting too far towards attack. But the modern footballer—even an attacking one—understands his defensive responsibilities. They all contribute.”

The 74-year-old Frenchman, now FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, highlighted a defining psychological edge he sees in Deschamps’ side.

“When you’re locked at 0‑0 against France with 20 minutes remaining, you’ve already lost that match. Their power makes the difference.”

France lifted the World Cup in 2018 but fell just short in 2022, losing a thrilling final to Argentina on penalties. With a golden generation still in its prime, Wenger is convinced that 2026 will be their year once again.
