The Taraba State government has explained that, the designation of Karim Lamido local government area as a special area of security concern was necessitated by emerging security threats capable of disrupting peace, safety and economic activities in the locality, if not addressed.
The government said the decision followed careful security assessments, intelligence reports and extensive consultations with security agencies and other relevant authorities, aimed at preventing a possible escalation of insecurity.
This is contained in a statement signed by the chief press secretary to the governor, Yusuf Sanda, in Jalingo yesterday.
It noted that Governor Agbu Kefas approved the measure in his capacity as the Chief Security Officer of the state.
According to the statement, the move was part of the state government’s proactive and preventive measure to protect lives and property, safeguard livelihoods and ensure peaceful coexistence among residents of Karim Lamido area.
The government stressed that the designation does not translate to a declaration of a state of emergency, nor does it suspend civil authority or target any particular community, ethnic group or religion within the local government area.
It assured residents that lawful activities such as farming, trading, worship and local governance would continue unhindered.
“The measure is solely aimed at strengthening security architecture in the identified flashpoint areas.”
