Niger State governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has disclosed the motivation behind his contest for the House of Representatives’ speaker in 2019 and why he did not probe his predecessor, Senator Sani Bello.
He spoke at a meeting held with aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last primary at the Government House, Minna.
The governor who raised plethora of issues concerning his party and political development of Niger State also gave reasons why he did not probe his predecessor as is always the case in the state.
He recalled that during the second term campaign of his predecessor, Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, he was the only House of Representatives member who followed him to all the campaigns and after that the governor urged him to contest for the speaker of the House of Representatives.
“I was the only member of House of Representative who followed him (Senator Sani Bello) for his second term campaign and after that he called me and his wife to ask whether the seat was for North Central and I said yes, and he then said I should go and contest but afterwards he did not support me again but I went ahead and contested,” he said in a speech in Hausa at the meeting.
Bago said in the meeting that during the speakership election, even the members of House of Representatives from Niger State were instructed not to vote for him saying that he did not hold that against any of them after he failed to clinch the position.
He posited that, so far, he is the only governor in Niger State who refused to probe his predecessor saying that he decided not to do so for peace and unity of the party and the state.
The governor therefore urged APC members in the state to continue to rally round the government at all levels to bring about the desired growth and development of the state while commending the aspirants for their understanding and patience.
