Sports promoter and philanthropist, Senator Ned Nwoko, has among other things attributed Team Nigeria’s woeful performance at the recently concluded Paris 2024 Olympic Games in France to poor leadership and lack of investment in sports infrastructure in the country.

The federal lawmaker argued that the Nigerian sports authorities failed to provide the necessary support and guidance needed for athletes to strive at the global sports fiesta, leading to a lack of direction and focus.

Senator Nwoko, who also noted that poor preparation and lack of talent discovery programmes in the country as well as inadequate funding accounted for Nigeria’s failure in Paris, advocated for the construction of modern sports facilities and equipment to provide athletes with the necessary resources to train and compete.

He also suggested the establishment of talent discovery and development programs, noting that identifying and nurturing young talents and providing them with the necessary support and guidance will lead Nigeria to podium successes at the next Olympics:

He called for effective leadership and administration in Nigerian sports if the country hope to improve its performance and win medals in future Olympics.

LEADERSHIP Sports recalled that the Paris 2024 Olympics ended with Nigeria facing a bitterly disappointing outcome marked by a lack of medals despite a whopping investment of N9 billion and a sizable contingent of 88 athletes competing in 12 sports at the Games.
