Construction has officially commenced on the long-abandoned Nyanya–Karshi–Wassa–Apo Road project in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following the revocation of the previous contract by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Originally awarded in 2011, the road remained incomplete for 14 years due to the contractor’s inability to deliver. In response to the prolonged delay and its impact on residents and commuters, the FCT Administration revoked the contract and awarded it to SCC.
SCC has now mobilised to the site, with workers and equipment already deployed.
During the Minister’s inspection visit to the site on Monday, engineers on the project briefed him on the current stage of work and measures being taken to fast-track completion.
“Your Excellency, welcome to the construction of Abu Karshi Road ,” one of the project supervisors said while explaining the scope of the work.
“As you can see, starting from channel 00 down to the last channel, the length is 13.125 kilometres, and a lot of filling is going on right now.”
According to the contractor, the priority at this stage was to make the previously impassable road motorable and safe for both workers and equipment.
“We started first of all to make the road motorable. The road was not motorable before. So we started filling all the potholes and making the road motorable and safe for our equipment and workers,” he said, adding that about 75 workers have already been deployed to the site.
He further revealed that a damaged culvert along the route, which is at the point of collapse, would be completely removed and replaced.
“The culvert is actually at the stage of collapse. We have about a 10 to 12 metre excavation to remove it. And instead of one-cell culvert, we are going to install two-cell culverts to be able to handle all the water that will come,” he stated.
On the timeline for completion, the contractor assured the Minister that though the official duration for the project is 12 months, efforts will be made to deliver it earlier.
“Officially it is 12 months. Unofficially, we are going to cut it to your satisfaction, sir. We are going to do our best. We are very grateful for the opportunity and we will not disappoint. We are fully committed, sir,” he added.
The Nyanya–Karshi–Wassa–Apo road is a critical route for residents in the area, and its completion is expected to significantly improve transportation, safety and economic activities in the corridor.
