Xiaomi Banks On 7,500mAh Battery To Win Nigerian Smartphone Buyers

Xiaomi is banking on longer battery life and faster charging to boost its position in Nigeria’s competitive entry-level smartphone market with the launch of its new Redmi 17.

According to the company, the device’s performance features and affordability will appeal to Nigerian consumers, who are increasingly weighing value for money when purchasing smartphones.

The smartphone is scheduled for launch in Nigeria on September 1. It comes with a 7,500mAh battery and 45W Turbo Charging, features the company said were designed for users who spend extended periods on their phones for communication, entertainment, digital transactions, work and online learning.

Speaking with journalists during a briefing in Lagos ahead of the launch, a Xiaomi representative said the company expects the Redmi 17 to record six-digit sales over its lifecycle in Nigeria.

However, the company declined to disclose a specific sales target or the device’s expected price.

The pricing question remains significant as rising memory costs continue to put pressure on smartphone manufacturers and consumers.

The Xiaomi representative said the company’s supply chain remained stable but acknowledged that component costs had increased, adding that the company would maintain device quality rather than use second-hand memory to cut costs.

“Our bottom line is that we will not use any second-hand memory to reduce the quality,” the representative said.

Xiaomi said the Redmi 17’s 7,500mAh battery is rated to deliver up to 91 hours of music playback. At the same time, about 35 minutes of charging can provide a full day’s use under the company’s stated test conditions.

The device also supports 22.5W wired reverse charging, allowing users to power compatible devices from the smartphone.

Other specifications include a 6.9-inch display with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, a MediaTek Helio G91-Ultra processor, a 50MP AI dual-camera system and dynamic RGB lighting.

For durability, the smartphone comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 7i and an IP64 rating for dust and splash resistance.

The combination of the device’s battery capacity and charging speed could appeal to Nigerian consumers who rely heavily on smartphones for daily activities yet must plan their use around electricity availability.

The manufacturer said it has service locations across the country to provide after-sales support and enable customers to access repairs.

“For Xiaomi, we have after-sales places around the country. If anyone has any issues with the smartphone, we will direct them to our after-sales branch to get it fixed,” the representative said.

The company is also considering an extended warranty for the device, although the final duration has yet to be confirmed.

With the Redmi 17 entering Nigeria’s price-sensitive smartphone market, Xiaomi’s ability to balance its specifications, including its battery capacity, charging speed and other features, with affordability could ultimately determine how well the device competes for consumers seeking value for money.
