Chairman of Yauri local government area of Kebbi State, Hon. Abubakar Shuaibu, has confirmed that one person died and many properties destroyed during the recent violent clash between the locals and youths at a mining site in Katta community.
Shuaibu confirmed this to our reporter when he spoke about the incident during a telephone interview yesterday.
He said, “That’s why I imposed curfew from 10.00pm to 7.00am in order to have peace in the area.
“What actually happened is that the violence began on Saturday last week, when a group of gold miners allegedly attacked and killed an individual, in retaliation, the victim’s relative launched an attack on the miners the following day. “
“In response, the gold miners reportedly went on a rampage, vandalising shops and setting motorcycles on fire indiscriminately” “ he added.
He further disclosed that the situation escalated again after his vice chairman returned from the burial of the victim and informed him that the gold miners were attacking people within the community.
