The inaugural Yenagoa City International 10KM Race has been hailed as a clear declaration of Bayelsa State’s ambition to establish itself on the global sporting landscape, according to Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Limited.
Speaking at a pre-race press conference in Yenagoa, Mrs. Olopade emphasised that the race, set for Saturday, 4th April 2026, transcends a mere athletic competition. She described it as a strategic initiative designed to foster youth engagement, stimulate the local economy, and drive community development.
“This event is not just another race; it is a statement of intent,” she asserted. “A statement that Bayelsa State is poised to take its rightful place on the global sporting stage, and that excellence is not accidental, but a deliberate pursuit.”
Organised by Nilayo Sports Management Ltd as consultants to the Bayelsa State Government, the event has garnered significant backing from Governor Douye Diri and the State Ministry of Sports. Mrs. Olopade commended their foresight and dedication to delivering a world-class sporting spectacle. Nilayo Sports Management Limited is providing essential technical expertise and strategic guidance to ensure the race adheres to international best practices and standards.
“Our objective is unequivocal: to deliver a race that is not only successful domestically but also globally credible,” she added.
The event has already drawn international interest, with representatives from World Athletics anticipated to be present to observe and evaluate the race.
Distinguished attendees at the press conference included the Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Daniel Igali; Commissioner for Information, Hon. (Mrs.) Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai; Vice President, Nigeria Olympic Committee, Chief Solomon Ogba; World Athletics Representative, Nadeem Khan; and Chairman, Elite Athletes Development & Podium Board, Yusuf Alli.
Athletes from across Nigeria and beyond are expected to participate in the 10K race, which will culminate at Peace Park, opposite Government House, serving as the official finish line and hub for post-race festivities.
Mrs. Olopade extended her gratitude to all partners, sponsors, and the media for their invaluable support in promoting the vision, and encouraged Bayelsa residents to attend in large numbers to be part of this historic occasion.
