As part of measures towards encouraging sustainability in managing public facilities, the Yobe State government under governor Mai Mala Buni, through Multi- Sectoral Crises Recovery Project (MCRP) supported a total of 84 School Based Management Committees (SBMC) with funds for the repair and management of learning facilities such as furniture among others.
Speaking during a one-day orientation meeting with the benefiting SBMCs in Damaturu, the State Project Coordinator, Musa Idi Jidawa said the occasion was organised with a view to intimate them on the modalities of spending the amount for better progress.
Jidawa said after a series of scrutiny over those applied, a total of 84 School Based Management Committees (SBMCs) in 11 local government areas of the state were selected and empowered urging them to adhere strictly to the laid down terms and conditions of expending the amount released to them to improve learning outcome.
“The participants of the orientation are chairmen and secretaries of the respective School Based Management Committees (SBMCs) of the respective local government education authorities, representative of ministry and that of State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB) respectively.
“The funds are to be used by the School Management Committees of the targeted schools in the areas of repairing broken-down furniture and toilet facilities, providing first aid and sporting facilities, providing temporary shelters and essential consumables including writing materials.
“You are aware of the guidelines and this training was meant to acquaint them further so what we are expecting from them is for them to go and implement immediately as various layers of sub supervision and monitoring will commence in action.
“But looking at the integrity of the benefiting members of the committee, we are comfortable that the SBMCs would do the needful in actualizing the great mission of Governor Mai Mala Buni especially on the declaration of state of emergency on basic and secondary education.
“The SBMCs have several sources of funding such as direct funding from the state government in the form of grant or capital alliances, individual contributions from members, community contributions/donations, grants from corporate organisations or donors among others hence they have the prerequisite knowledge on management such support.”
