A grassroots fundraising initiative in Yobe State has generated approximately N188 million in pledges and donations to support the purchase of governorship nomination and expression of interest forms for Ahmad Lawan ahead of the 2027 election.
The fundraiser, held on Sunday in Damaturu, the state capital, drew contributions from a wide cross-section of residents, reflecting strong grassroots backing for the former Senate President’s potential bid under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued to journalists in Abuja yesterday, Senator Lawan expressed appreciation to the Coalition of Yobe East Progressive Youths, led by Dr Mohammed Yerima, for organising the initiative.
He described the effort as “a demonstration of responsible citizenship” and a redefinition of grassroots political participation.
Preliminary reports indicate that the funds were raised through a combination of pledges, cash donations and bank transfers into a dedicated account with Sterling Bank.
Lawan highlighted that the most impactful aspect of the exercise was the volume of small contributions—ranging from ₦100 to ₦3,000—donated by widows, mechanic apprentices, traders and students.
“That, to me, is the true definition of grassroots participation and community ownership. You have not only raised funds for forms; you have redefined what it means to be progressive citizens of Yobe State,” he said.
The senator added that the initiative represented a collective investment in a vision for an open, accountable, and transparent government driven by the people.
“My desire to serve is to answer the call of our people. May Allah continue to direct and guide us in this endeavour, Amin,” he stated.
