Management of Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) has condemned the recent physical assault on its personnel and invasion of its office in Biu local government area of Borno State.

YEDC, in a statement signed by its communication officer, Blessing Tunoh, said attacks on staff carrying out their lawful duties were unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

It reiterated that assaulting utility personnel and vandalising power infrastructure constitute criminal offences under Section 220(1) of the Electricity Act 2023.

Tunoh said unfortunately, the incident in Biu involved the forceful entry into YEDC office by criminal elements, resulting in the assault of staff, destruction of property and the burning of company vehicles.

She added that several operational assets including service cables, meters, computers, refrigerators, television sets and other office equipment were also carted away.

“These actions disrupt service delivery and pose serious risks to electrical infrastructure and the safety of personnel.

” In light of this development, operations in Biu have been temporarily suspended.

“YEDC advises its esteemed customers to always channel all complaints and grievances through established and lawful complaint resolution mechanisms.

“Acts of violence only create a hostile environment and may compel the Company to withdraw services from affected areas and prosecute offenders to the full extent of the law”, Tunoh said.

She added that the company remains committed to delivering safe, reliable and efficient electricity services and called on all stakeholders to support efforts aimed at protecting critical power infrastructure and personnel.

” The safety and wellbeing of our employees remain our highest priority,” she further said.
