Ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria and Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has ordered the deployment of 4,000 operatives to fortify all entry and exit routes in the nation’s seat of power, to ensure public safety during the yuletide.
This was disclosed yesterday in a statement by the command’s public relations officer, Okomanyi Comfort.
The FCT commandant of the corps, Mr Olusola Odumosu in a statement, directed all area commanders, divisional officers, heads of tactical teams, intelligence and operational units to massively deploy their operatives to fortify all the entry and exit routes, highways and recreational centres amongst other strategic places.
He asked the operatives to conduct a consistent patrol of all-flash points across the FCT devoid of fundamental human rights infringements and identified black spots, and uncompleted buildings to fully ensure that FCT residents enjoy a hitch-free festivity before, during and after the Christmas celebration.
Mr Odumosu also hinted that a robust operational order covering the entire Federal Capital Territory had been released and was being fully implemented.
The statement reads, “The Command’s Special Forces and various tactical units such as the Armed Squad, Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), Rapid Response Team, Special Female Squad, Agro Rangers unit, Anti vandals unit, Crisis and disaster management unit, Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear Explosive Unit (CBRNE) and the Intelligence Unit were mobilised for this assignment.”
The proactive step, according to the Commandants, is to ensure effective security coverage due to the influx of visitors to the FCT, which they fear may lead to increased social, economic and criminal activities during this period.
“The mission of this operation is to provide robust security for visitors, and residents and the protection of Critical National Assets and public utilities in the FCT.
“While we expect the influx of visitors at this period, some residents may also travel out of the territory, leaving behind their houses, property and other belongings which are vulnerable to criminals, “Odumosu explained.
He assured that all operational and intelligence assets at the disposal of the Command had been fully deployed to cover strategic locations and soft targets like places of worship, recreational centres, markets, shopping malls, parks, gardens and suspected flash points.
In the same vein, he directed all the area commanders and divisional officers (DOs) across the six area councils to maintain 24-hour high visibility day and night patrols around all the nooks and crannies of the territory.
He expressed confidence that with the existing synergy and high sense of collaboration amongst various security agencies, peace and order shall be guaranteed and maintained during the yuletide period in the FCT.
