As millions of Nigerians embark on journeys for the Christmas and New Year festivities, the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has appealed to motorists to exercise caution, declaring that human life is sacred and priceless.

The National Executive President of RTEAN, Dr Muhammed Musa Mai-Takobi, in a statement signed by the National Deputy President of the union, Ambassador Muhammad Abubakar Bishara, also appealed passionately to all road transport operators, drivers, motor park officials and commuters to place safety above speed and profit as Nigerians travel to reunite with their families and loved ones.

Mai-Takobi stressed that human life remains sacred and priceless, adding that no journey is worth risking lives.

RTEAN urged drivers to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations, and to avoid over-speeding, dangerous overtaking, overloading, as well as the use of alcohol or drugs while driving.

“We appeal passionately to all road transport operators, drivers, motor park officials and commuters to place safety above speed and profit.

“Drivers must strictly avoid over-speeding, dangerous overtaking, overloading, as well as the use of alcohol or drugs while driving,” he cautioned.

Vehicle owners were equally tasked with ensuring proper vehicle maintenance, carrying out roadworthiness checks, and complying with all safety standards before embarking on any journey.

The transport union also called for active vigilance from commuters, urging them to cooperate with drivers by discouraging reckless driving, insisting on safe practices and reporting any unsafe conduct.

Parents and guardians were also advised to caution young drivers to exercise patience, discipline and responsibility on the roads.

Commending the efforts of traffic and security agencies, Mai-Takobi specifically noted the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police Force for their sustained efforts in ensuring road safety, especially during this peak travel period.

He further pledged RTEAN’s full cooperation with all stakeholders to reduce road crashes and save lives.
