1 Assailant Killed As Security Operatives Repel Fresh Attack On NIPSS

Security operatives have repelled another attack by suspected gunmen on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos, in Plateau State, killing one of the assailants during a gun battle.

The attack, which occurred around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, targeted the institute’s outer security perimeter but was successfully foiled before the attackers could gain access to the facility.

According to security sources, the gunmen attempted to breach the institute’s security but were met with fierce resistance from security personnel.

Confirming the incident in a statement issued on Thursday, the Head of Public Affairs at NIPSS, Osime Samuel, said security personnel engaged the attackers in a gun duel, forcing them to flee after a swift and coordinated response.

“One of the assailants was neutralised during the encounter, while others fled, some with suspected gunshot injuries,” the statement said.

Samuel stressed that the attackers failed to penetrate the institute, noting that all participants of the Senior Executive Course, members of staff, residents and facilities within the premises remained safe.

He explained that the prompt response by security personnel prevented what could have been a major security breach at the nation’s foremost policy and strategic research institute.

The latest incident comes just days after security operatives foiled a similar attack around the institute, raising fresh concerns over repeated attempts by armed groups to target the facility.

In response to the growing threats, NIPSS has strengthened its security architecture in recent weeks by deploying additional armed personnel, enhancing night surveillance, tightening access controls and improving collaboration with sister security agencies through joint patrols across Kuru and neighbouring communities.

Officials said the enhanced security measures followed intelligence reports indicating heightened threats to critical national institutions in Plateau State.

Authorities also disclosed that security assessments are ongoing to identify and address any vulnerabilities while ensuring sustained protection of the institute, which regularly hosts senior government officials, military officers, policymakers and other strategic national leaders.

The renewed attack highlights persistent security challenges in parts of Plateau State despite repeated assurances by federal and state authorities to bolster security around critical national assets and public institutions.
