2027: Kebbi ADC Alleges Malami’s Prosecution Is Politically Motivated

The Kebbi State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that the prosecution of its governorship candidate and former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, is politically motivated and aimed at weakening the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The allegation was contained in a statement jointly signed by the party’s State Chairman, Engr. Sufiyanu Bala, and Chairman of the ADC Elders Forum, Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Sambawa.

The party said it was not opposed to the lawful investigation or prosecution of any citizen but argued that the circumstances surrounding Malami’s case suggested political persecution rather than a genuine anti-corruption effort.

According to the ADC, the petition, investigation, arrest, detention and prosecution of the former minister were driven by political considerations instead of the pursuit of justice.

The party also questioned Malami’s arrest and detention over what it described as a bailable offence, alleging that security operatives searched his properties in his absence and exaggerated the value of his family’s assets in an attempt to damage his reputation.

It further argued that the allegations against the former minister failed to take into account his personal background, family assets and achievements before he was appointed Attorney-General of the Federation.

While expressing confidence in the judiciary, the ADC said it believed the appellate courts would ensure justice in the matter.

The party also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using anti-corruption agencies and elements of the judicial system to intimidate opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The ADC maintained that its members remained united in support of Malami despite what it described as harassment, blackmail and media attacks, insisting that no amount of political pressure would weaken the party ahead of the governorship election.
