2027: Succession Politics Rents Air In Adamawa

Political tension is building in Adamawa State ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with growing concerns among stakeholders over succession plans and alleged attempts to influence candidate selection within party structures.

The atmosphere in the state remains shaped by the fallout of the 2023 governorship election, which many residents still described as unsettling and emotionally charged.

A public affairs analyst, Ifeanyi Ugwu, said the memories of the last election remained fresh, contributing to heightened anxiety across communities.

“It was a horrendous event, even to recount,” Ugwu said. “The outcome may have restored order, but the scars are still very fresh in the minds of the people.”

Ugwu, who recently visited the state, noted that political conversations have intensified, with many residents expressing concerns about control, representation, and inclusion ahead of 2027 polls.

“Everywhere you turn, people are talking about taking back their land politically. The tension now is even worse than what I saw after 2023,” he added.

Adamawa, a state with more than 80 indigenous ethnic groups, is witnessing increasing agitation from these communities, many of whom insist that the next governor should emerge from their ranks.

A socio-cultural leader, who spoke anonymously, said the demand is rooted in long-standing grievances over marginalisation.

“The ethnic nationalities are in the majority, and they believe it is only fair that one of their own becomes governor,” the source said. “They are not ready to accept any form of imposition.”

The development is already influencing political alignments, particularly within the All Progressives Congress (APC), where several groups are reportedly positioning themselves while attaching conditions to their support.

“Our support is not automatic,” another stakeholder said. “It depends on whether the process is fair and whether the party allows the people to choose freely.”

Some of the groups also expressed confidence in Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, commending his policies on cultural inclusion and recognition of traditional institutions.

“He has given us a sense of belonging by creating chiefdoms and emirates that were long erased,” a community member said. “We trust him to guide the process and ensure that one of our sons succeeds him.”

Despite these assurances, concerns persist over alleged behind-the-scenes manoeuvres aimed at influencing the party’s eventual candidate.

“There are powerful interests trying to misinform the presidency and block the chances of the majority,” another source alleged. “If that happens, it could create serious problems.”

Stakeholders warn that any attempt to impose a candidate could provoke resistance and deepen political divisions in the state.

“If the APC insists on imposition, people are ready to resist it, even if it means withdrawing their support,” a political observer said.

Analysts said the unfolding situation may require careful attention from President Bola Tinubu, given Adamawa’s strategic political importance.

“Adamawa is too important to ignore,” Ugwu noted. “If these issues are not carefully managed, the state could slide into deeper political instability as 2027 approaches.”
