35 Countries Arrive In Ogun For African U18/U20 Athletics Championship

The stage is set for the third edition of the CAA U18/U20 African Athletics Championship with 35 African countries now in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State preparing for this continental showcase.

The latest contingents comprising Algeria and Morocco touched down on Monday night, joining a stellar lineup of nations ready to compete.

Starting on Wednesday, July 16th, the Championship which will take place at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta will run till July 20th.

With just a day to the commencement of the tournament, excitement is building across the city as delegations from countries such as South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Ghana, and Egypt settle in for what promises to be a thrilling display of youth athletics.

As the host nation, Nigeria has put all necessary structures in place to deliver a world-class competition, with security, protocol, transportation, and accommodation measures fully activated for athletes and officials.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Kola Daniel, the host city is buzzing with energy, as cultural troupes showcase vibrant displays of Nigeria’s rich heritage.

North African delegations, among others, have expressed great enthusiasm, with many participating in traditional dances to immerse themselves in the fun and the atmosphere.

Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) held its congress meeting at the Confluence Hotel, where key discussions were held regarding the future of athletics in Africa.

The session was led by CAA President Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, with discussions focusing on reforms, sustainability, and enhancing the competitive edge of African athletes on the global stage.

The Congress forms a strategic part of the championship activities, ensuring that the event is not solely about competition but also about establishing policies and a vision for the future of the sport on the continent.
