45 Die In Abuja, Ogun Multiple Auto Crashes

No fewer than 45 people were killed while several others were injured in multiple auto crashes in the FCT and Ogun State yesterday.

In the FCT, 20 people were killed at Dutse-Baupma along the Dutse-Bwari Expressway in Bwari Area Council.

Sources said the incident occurred when a truck’s brakes failed, causing it to crash into several vehicles, including commercial tricycles.

The first one in Ogun involved a Mack truck marked SEY 363 YY, a tanker with registration number T2900LA and a bus marked LSD 180 YA at about 7:00am around NIPCO filling station on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, claiming seven lives while four were injured.

The second multiple crash involved seven vehicles  at about 4:00pm around Mosimi along Sagamu-Ikorodu Road while the operatives of FRSC were clearing an earlier accident.

A vehicle with faulty brake reportedly ran into the rescue team killing a FRSC staff and 18 others.

The spokesperson of the Ogun State Sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Florence Okpe, disclosed this in a statement yesterday.

She said the second incident accident was caused by excessive speeding on the part of the driver of the Mack truck Which led to loss of control after which it rammed into the other two vehicles.

She said, “A total of 22 people were involved  in the multiple crash ( 14 male , 6 female and 01 child) 04 people were injured and 18  persons were killed including one of the rescue officer who happened to be an FRSC personnel.

“This happened when vehicle one and two crashed and the FRSC rescue team were carrying out the rescue operation when another vehicle ran into them as a result of brake failure and killed the FRSC staff.

“The injured victims were taken to Dasochris Hospital Gbaga while the deceased were deposited at OOUTH. The crash involved 07 vehicles with registration numbers as follows AGL752YC Toyota Hiace bus, T14007LA DAF Truck, HT680 Honda car, another DAF truck with no registration, STF10204 Pick up, AGG448Q motorbike and 
PKA214WS Bajaj motorcycle.”
