At least five people including the driver were on Saturday confirmed dead in an auto crash that occurred Saturday along the ever busy Lagos-Badagry Expressway in the state.

Eyewitnesses said the accident involved a Toyota Camry with registration number FKJ 630KS collided with an Iveco truck with registration number T28081 LA around the Mowo end of the expressway in Badagry Local Government Area.

”The accident happened early in morning at about 5am . The Toyota Camry was on a very high speed with full lights on , then it’s like the driver slept off because the motor veered off the road and collided with the truck coming from the other direction,” sa one of the eyewitness who identified himself as Anthony Hunjo

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the accident explained that preliminary findings indicated that the accident occurred at Sawmill, near Mowo Bus Stop when the Toyota Camry driver drove the car recklessly, lost control, crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the oncoming Iveco truck.

According to him, the emergency response Dolphin Team from Igando Base was mobilised to the scene following a distress call received at 5:16 a.m, adding that preliminary findings indicated that

He said the five deceased persons were occupants of the Toyota Camry, adding that their remains were recovered and handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, for further necessary action.

“The response operation involved LASEMA, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASTMA, FRSC and officers of the Nigeria Police Force from Morogbo Division.

“Two tow trucks were deployed to remove the damaged vehicles, which were taken to Morogbo Police Division. The expressway was subsequently cleared and reopened to traffic.”

Oke-Osanyintolu however commiserated with the families of the deceased and urged motorists to avoid speeding, wrongful overtaking and other dangerous driving practices, particularly during the early morning hours.

While reaffirming LASEMA’s commitment to prompt emergency response and inter-agency collaboration to protect lives and property across Lagos, he pointed out that road safety is a shared responsibility of everyone.
