Following the outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis in four local government areas of Bauchi State, a medical practitioner at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital Bauchi (ATBUTH), Dr Sani Abdulkarim Giade has warned households to ensure maximum sanitation and hygiene in their surroundings to avert more casualties.

LEADERSHIP reports that 17 people died from meningitis in Tafawa Balewa, Dambam, Misau and Katagum local government areas. Similarly, 65 suspected cases of cerebrospinal meningitis were recorded.

Giade said this in an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP in Bauchi. He emphasised the need for personal and environmental hygiene as another way to prevent meningitis that is more prevalent at the onset of the rainy season.

Giade explained that the killer disease is contracted by people of all ages but children are at high risk because they have less immunity and advised that they should be given extra attention.
