The chairman of the Anambra State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Humphrey Nwafor has made it clear that his leadership would press for the state civil servants to be paid the arrears of the N35,000 provisional wage approved by the federal government for its civil servants which formed part of the agreements between the federal government and organised labour that staved off the nationwide strike planned to commence yesterday.
He, however, stated that the union leaders in the state would wait for the directive of the national leadership of the NLC on how the unions in the state should engage their respective state governments on the N35,000 provisional wage.
The state NLC leader told LEADERSHIP exclusively that both state and local government workers were optimistic of benefitting from the N35,000 provisional wage approved by the federal government for its workers because the agreement between the federal government and the leadership of the organised labour provided under the item number 10, that states and local governments workers should also benefit from the same gesture as the federal government workers.
“You know that the Anambra State government had already been paying the civil servants a similar gesture of N12,000 since September (2023).
“So, we will engage the state government over the N35,000 approved by the federal government, we shall be asking for the arrears. But we can’t do anything until we get directive from our national headquarters because they are going to direct the state chapters on how to engage our state governments on the issue,” Nwafor stated.
