Borno State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has decried the meagre amount of N4000 received by some pensioners in Borno State and urged the state governor, Babagana Zulum to review the pension in view of rising cost of living.

The NLC chairman, Comrade Yusuf Inuwa, lamented this in an address yesterday in Maiduguri to mark the 2024 May Day celebration at the Ramat Square in Maiduguri.

He advocated an upward review of the pension to improve retirees’ social and economic well-being.

He said, ” Your Excellency, we wish to table before you that at this moment, there are some pensioners who are still receiving N4,000 as pension per month, which is grossly inadequate.

“We, therefore, pray for His Excellency intervention for upward review of the monthly pension,” said Mr Inuwa.

He also called for the national minimum wage, payment of outstanding leave grants, and providing transport grants to local government employees in the state.

The NLC chairman expressed the workers’ commitment to the state government’s transformation agenda and lauded Governor Babagana Zulum’s administration for the feat achieved in workers’ welfare.

He listed some of the achievements, to include implementing promotion benefits to workers in the mainstream; paying gratuities to the families of deceased workers, and providing subsidised buses for workers and members of the public.

Also, Babayo Hamma, chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Borno, urged the state government to adopt the minimum wage approved by the federal government.

The deputy governor Umar Kadafur lauded the harmonious relationship between labour and the state government.
