The upgrade is to ensure that infrastructures, laboratories and libraries are well upgraded to meet up with the global trend of teaching and learning environment.

The executive secretary of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), Dr Iyela Ajayi, made this known recently in Lokoja during his working visit to the commissioner for education, Kogi State, Hon Wemi Jones. Ajayi paid a need assessment visit to some schools in the state.

Ajayi, in a press statement issued yesterday by the commission’s spokesperson, Fatima Bappare, said the government has selected Government Secondary School, Koton Karfi as the first school in Kogi State to be upgraded.

He also lamented over the deplorable state of the school laboratories, infrastructure, libraries and assured the state of NSSEC intervention in these areas in no time.

The executive secretary noted that the NSSEC proposed minimum standard will significantly reposition senior secondary education which had suffered neglect and deterioration in terms of staffing, infrastructure and laboratories equipment, leading to the production of poor quality students.

Ajayi emphasised the commission’s commitment in training and retraining of teachers in their various subjects to enable them to impart the right knowledge to the students and position them for global impact and appealed to the state government to partner with NSSEC to accomplish this mission.

In his welcome remarks, the Kogi State commissioner for education, Hon Wemi Jones, commended the federal government for the establishment of NSSEC to regulate senior secondary schools’ education.

He assured that Kogi State government is committed to the growth of education hence the upward review of the education budget in the state to 30 percent, and also noted that the state government is working towards establishing senior secondary schools in every local government to enhance the accessibility of senior secondary schools at the local government level.
